Tom Wentworth Launch!

Pentabus and Fair Acre Press present the launch of the newly published play script Windy Old Fossils by Tom Wentworth.

Free Event at Ludlow Assembly Rooms
Saturday 27 July
Doors open 5.45pm for a 6pm start
Ends 7pm

Come to this free event and meet Tom Wentworth at the launch of his play script Windy Old Fossils. There will be a rehearsed reading of  extracts from the play by actors Carol Caffrey and David Wright, a talk from Tom Wentworth and Sophie Motley, as well as a short question and answer session.

Tom is from South Shropshire. He has been commissioned by Graeae, The Watermill, the Bush and National Theatre Wales. His latest play Burke and Hare has just finished a successful run in the West End. Tom was one of the first Pentabus Young Writers in 2014 where the journey of Windy Old Fossils began.

The play is about elderly siblings, Ted and Lizzie, huddle in their Shropshire cottage with nothing but the winter wind for company. As the weather gets colder, their electricity keeps blacking out and they begin to go to desperate and often humorous lengths to keep warm. Windy Old Fossils is a black comedy about age, energy and isolation.

Tom Wentworth is a fantastic Shropshire playwright who’s really making a name for himself. He’s one to add to the list of local talent, and his journey began in Ludlow as one of our very first Pentabus Young Writers. We’re thrilled to welcome him back to Ludlow to publish the play that he wrote for Pentabus.’ Artistic Director, Sophie Motley

About Pentabus:

‘Pentabus is probably one of the most important theatre companies in the country, where it has led, other new writing theatres – such as the Royal Court – have followed’   Matt Trueman, The Telegraph 2018

Pentabus is the nation’s rural theatre company. We are the only professional theatre company in the UK whose vision is singularly rural. We tour new plays about the contemporary rural world to new audiences in village halls, fields, festivals and theatres, telling stories with local relevance, plus national and international impact. We believe that every person living in an isolated rural community has a right to exceptional theatre. We are based on a farm in Shropshire, and to date all of our work has been made here. It then tours village halls and theatres locally and nationally. Over four and a half decades we’ve produced 171 new plays, reached over 550,000 audience members, won a prestigious South Bank Show award for our show about racism, a Fringe First for our play about climate change and were the first to live stream from a village hall. We have hosted a writer in residence since 2014 and they have gone on to be commissioned by the Royal Court, Birmingham Rep, Royal Welsh College and the Bush.

We are a champion for rural young people aged 16 to 25 and Pentabus Young Company is our new initiative offering workshops, masterclasses, work experience and mentorships, as well as the opportunity to join our Young Writers’ Group, which has been running for five years. Previous participants of the Young Writers’ Group have had their work presented at Ludlow Fringe, Latitude Festival and Hereford Courtyard. It is a springboard into further study and the arts industry, with over 50% of our Young Writers going on to be published and professional writers.
