Nettles Liz Lefroy
for Morar
Let’s talk about the colour of the comfort of soup,
its peculiar intensity of green: let’s contain here
the abundance of this runaway weed,
the wilt of what grows more easily than spinach;
let’s remember the wartime-you gloved-up
to pick nine handfuls of what could not easily
be bought (food, that is), watching your mother
transform it like another miracle;
let’s set these things against the needles of sting,
the memories of acids brushed into our legs
when climbing stiles in optimistic shorts,
when edging into ditches to avoid traffic:
those blistered rashes we’ve tried to soothe with dock.
Let’s rub leaf on leaf to find what’s left, on balance.
